Temptation, Schtemptation.

There comes a time in everyone’s life when one decides that the time has come to stop imbibing our good friend Alcohol. I attended a friend’s familial gathering a few weeks ago under  the influence of just this sort of resolution.

There was a tent, and I was directed to two drums of drinks. Trevor, who was in charge of opening bottles and handing out straws, stood at one of them. I peeked in the first drum and my resolve encountered its first battle.

Beers. All kinds of ‘em. I tore my gaze away and moved to the second drum, pulled out a soda, and handed it to Trevor to open.

“Are you sure?” he asked with a frown. “You’re certain?”.

You know you want me

You know you want me

I stood firm to my newly adopted principles and assured him that indeed I really wanted to drink the detestable bottle of sugar.

I sat down and listened to the old and future dons discussing their affairs. After twenty minutes, the MC tentatively took the microphone for a public announcement.

“I’ve noticed that there are some people here who are drinking soda”, he said. “Please, in the back there, there is too much alcohol. We need it gone by the end of this event”.

Curse you, man. Curse you.

After another thirty minutes, another man approached me personally.

“Can I get you a real drink?” he asked, with a smile.

I will not cave. I will not give in. I MUST remain strong.

“No, thank you, I’m really fine”, I laughed.

Twenty minutes later, I heard a child’s voice behind me.

“Lindsey! Lindsey!”

I turned around, smiling. “Yes?”

“Aunty has asked me to ask you if you want some wine”

My one eternal weakness!

“No, no thank you” I said again, swallowing.

“You sure?” Aunty was standing there now. “We have all sorts of wine. All kinds. And it’s a lot! ”

You know you want us

You know you want us…
